Now More Relevant Than Ever: The Enhanced Motivating By Appreciation Inventory

We are EXCITED to announce an upgraded revision to one of our core tools – the Expanded Motivating By Appreciation Inventory!

At Appreciation at Work, we are dedicated to providing top quality, practical resources that are relevant to the ever-changing workplace. We are also committed to keeping those resources updated with the latest research and that has led to a updated and enhanced version of our Expanded Motivating By Appreciation Inventory.

Updated for the Modern Workplace

Originally developed in 2011, the Motivating By Appreciation Inventory (MBAI) has been taken by over 450,000 individuals around the world, and we’ve published over 10 studies documenting its reliability and validity. Since then, the workplace has evolved dramatically – and so have the ways employees want to be shown appreciation.

To ensure our results are current and accurate, we have enhanced the inventory with:

  • Relevant, Up-to-Date Insights: We updated the data, statistics, and reports to gather preferences for how individuals want to be appreciated now, rather than basing results on data gathered pre-COVID or during-COVID.
  • Expanded Resources: The updated reports now include new resources to help you apply your findings, including a supplemental article and a video from Dr. White explaining each person’s primary language of appreciation.

What Your Team Will Discover

The Expanded MBAI continues to provide a comprehensive view of individual appreciation preferences. The inventory identifies each person’s:

  • Primary, Secondary, and Least Valued Languages of Appreciation.
  • Specific actions they value most within their Primary Language.
  • From whom they most desire to receive those actions.

This provides a fuller picture of how each person prefers to be shown appreciation and, just as importantly, how they don’t want others to express appreciation to them.

We have also developed a Group Summary Report which helps each team member know the specific actions that impact their colleagues the most.

And, given that each appreciation language can look different in various work settings, we have created 13 different versions so the action items are practical and relevant to various industries (for example, an Act of Service will be quite different for an elementary school teacher vs. a nurse in a hospital vs. an HVAC repairman).

Gain Deeper Insight Into Your Team

Cover page of an MBA Inventory results report, Young Adult versionWe encourage you to take this opportunity to understand your team on a deeper level. Even if you and your team have taken the MBA Inventory previously, you can find out if your preferred appreciation language (or specific actions desired) have changed. By having them take the enhanced Expanded MBA Inventory, you can gain a broader, more accurate perspective on what truly motivates and encourages them. To celebrate our updated version of the Expanded MBAI, we are offering a $10 discount on each registration code purchased until the end of September 2025 (this offer is good for any of the Expanded MBAI versions, just use the code EXPANDED10 at check out). We hope you and your team will enjoy getting updated results and use them to encourage and support one another this fall!
